Pursuing futures through children: Crisis, social reproduction, and transformation in Burundi’s transnational families

Abstract Based on multisited fieldwork in Kigali, Rwanda, Belgium, and the Netherlands following political crisis Burundi 2015, we explore decisions plans for future among Burundians exile. In this way, contribute to research about making social reproduction families a transnational field affected by crisis. Adding literature, show specific effects of families’ practices aspirations, such as parental efforts prevent traumatic world views constant need readjust their ongoing dynamics. We argue that violence has disrupted migrant parents’ hopes better themselves, they redirect towards children’s futures. thus not only but also aspirations should be seen relational, particularly times particular, living Belgium seek provide offspring with skills become educated, moral beings, even it entails sacrificing own lives aspirations. Moreover, adding debates migrants’ reproduce cultural values host societies, find Burundian parents attempt change what perceive ‘culture hatred vengeance’ parenting practices. As such, many explicitly pursue transformation through children.
